Project Description:S.E.M. has completed the renovation and exterior enhancements for the Indigenous Learning Center at Western University, transforming the former library into a revitalized space. This architecturally focused project spans three levels and features numerous nature-inspired elements, including moss walls, wooden ceilings, curved walls, and glass partitions adorned with window films that highlight Indigenous art. The main floor boasts a spacious open-concept gathering area, new offices, a renovated mezzanine on the second level, and a lower level that includes teaching spaces, offices, and quiet lounge areas. From the lower level, users can access an exterior sunken circular classroom, which includes a ceremonial space and medicine gardens. Alongside these culturally significant architectural improvements, substantial upgrades were made to the building’s mechanical and electrical systems, incorporating a new high-efficiency heating and cooling system and LED lighting throughout.
